This Long Awaited Feature Just Made Your Life a Whole Lot Easier.

On Wednesday the 14th December 2022, my life became significantly more easier — all thanks to Tableau Tim popping up on my feed talking about Tableau’s new PROPER() string function.

So what does this function do? Well, let’s first talk about what you couldn’t do before.

If you had 2 string variables that you wanted to combine with say, a dash, in Excel you have 5 different ways in which you can do this. Easy. Guess how many ways you have in Tableau?

Zero.

This really makes me reflect on all the times my stakeholders show me how what they want is easy while whipping out their Excel sheets. Then you are left sitting there not knowing how to explain that Tableau is not Excel.

But alas, that is the past.

Here is what you need to do:

Step 1:

Download the latest version of Tableau here.

Step 2:

Find the string variables you need to join.

Step 3:

Join them using PROPER([First_Name], -, [Second_name])

PROPER([First_Name],-, [Second_name])

Tableau — Tim, if this article gets to you, thank you!
